August Onorato Curley was born on January 24, 1960. He is a former American football player. He played as a linebacker for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). He played for four seasons with the Lions. The team chose him in the 1983 NFL draft. Before turning professional, he played college football at the University of Southern California.

Early Life and College Football

August Onorato Curley was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up and went to Southwest High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

After high school, August Curley played college football for the USC Trojans. This is the team for the University of Southern California. He played from 1978 to 1982. He earned a varsity letter for three years, from 1980 to 1982.

The 1978 USC Trojans football team was very successful. They were named national champions by the Coaches Poll. This means coaches across the country voted them the best team. In 1980, August Curley made one interception. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.

During his junior year in 1981, he had a great season. He made 115 tackles and one interception. A tackle is when a defensive player brings down an offensive player. In 1982, his senior year, he started strong. He made 22 tackles in a game against the Florida Gators. However, he got injured the next week. This injury caused him to miss the rest of that season. He also had one interception in 1982.

Professional Football Career

The Detroit Lions picked August Curley in the 1983 NFL draft. He was chosen in the fourth round, as the 94th overall pick. He officially joined the team on June 1.

In his first year, 1983, he played in ten games for the Lions. But on November 9, 1983, he was placed on injured reserve. This happened because of a knee injury. The next year, on July 22, 1984, he was put on the physically unable to perform list. This was due to his knee injury acting up again. He was able to play again on October 24. He appeared in eight games during the 1984 season.

August Curley had a strong year in 1985. He played in all 16 games for the Lions. He started 14 of those games. He made 51 solo tackles and 24 assisted tackles. He also had two pass breakups and forced one fumble. A pass breakup is when a defensive player stops a pass from being completed. A forced fumble is when a player causes the ball carrier to drop the ball. The Lions finished that year with a record of 4 wins, 11 losses, and 1 tie.

In 1986, he was placed on injured reserve again on September 1. He was activated on November 1, 1986. He played in four games that season. After the 1986 season, he became a free agent. This means he was free to sign with any team.
