The Aurelio's rock lizard (Iberolacerta aurelioi) is a small type of lizard. It belongs to the family called Lacertidae. This lizard is special because it is endemic, meaning it only lives in one specific place: the Iberian peninsula.

What's in a Name?

The scientific name for this lizard, aurelioi, was chosen to honor Aurelio Arribas. He was the father of Oscar J. Arribas, the scientist who first described this species in 1994.

Where Does It Live?

I. aurelioi lives in a very small area. You can find it where the countries of Andorra, Spain, and France meet. It's like a special meeting point for this unique lizard!

Its Home Environment

This lizard likes to live in cool places. Its natural habitats include grassy areas, rocky spots, and pastures. It lives high up in the mountains, at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,940 meters (about 6,890 to 9,646 feet) above sea level.

What Does It Look Like?

Aurelio's rock lizard is quite small. From its nose to the base of its tail (called its snout-to-vent length or SVL), it can grow up to 6 centimeters (about 2.4 inches) long.

How It Reproduces

I. aurelioi is an oviparous animal. This means that the female lizard lays eggs, and the young lizards hatch from these eggs.

Why It Needs Our Help

Sadly, Aurelio's rock lizard is considered a threatened species. Its biggest danger is habitat loss. This means that the places where it naturally lives are shrinking or being destroyed, which makes it harder for these lizards to survive. Protecting their homes is very important!
