The Austin Brown Mound is an ancient Native American mound located near Chillicothe, Ohio, in the United States. It's also sometimes called the "Dwight Fullerton Mound." This special place was built by the Adena culture, a group of Native Americans who lived in this area a very long time ago. Mounds like this were often used for burials or important ceremonies.
Discovering the Austin Brown Mound
The Austin Brown Mound is a large, cone-shaped hill made by people. It's one of the biggest mounds built by the Adena culture. The Adena people lived in parts of Ohio and nearby states from about 1000 BC to 200 AD. They are known for building many earth mounds.
What Was Found Inside?
In 1897, a team led by Clarence Loveberry explored the mound. They dug a large tunnel into its side. During this dig, they found interesting items, called artifacts, left by the Adena culture. They also found signs of old, rotted logs on the floor of the mound.
However, the team didn't find any tombs or single burials inside the mound. This was a bit of a surprise at the time. Later, archaeologists learned that some Adena mounds have hidden wooden tombs. These tombs are often placed off-center to make them harder to find. It's possible the Austin Brown Mound also has a hidden tomb that wasn't discovered during the first exploration.
Why is This Mound Important?
Even though the first dig didn't find a tomb, the Austin Brown Mound is still very important. It's one of the largest Adena mounds ever found. Plus, it hasn't been damaged as much as many other large Adena mounds. This makes it a very valuable archaeological site. An archaeological site is a place where people can study the past by looking at things left behind.
Because of its historical and archaeological importance, the Austin Brown Mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. It is one of eighteen such sites in Ross County. Another nearby Adena mound on this list is the Charles Metzger Mound.
