Austin Dwayne Trout (born September 18, 1985) is an American professional boxer and bare-knuckle boxer. He is known for his skills in the ring. From 2011 to 2013, he held the World Boxing Association (WBA) light middleweight boxing title. More recently, in 2024, he became the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) welterweight champion. This shows he's a top fighter in both sports!

Early Life and Amateur Boxing

Growing Up in New Mexico

Austin Trout grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He went to Mayfield High School there.

Amateur Boxing Success

Before turning professional, Austin was a very successful amateur boxer. In 2004, he won the U.S. National Amateur Welterweight Championship. He almost made it onto the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team. Austin finished his amateur career with an impressive record of 163 wins, 42 losses, and 1 draw.

Professional Boxing Career

Starting Out as a Pro Boxer

Austin Trout began his professional boxing journey on September 1, 2005, when he was 19 years old. His first fight was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He won by TKO (Technical Knockout) in the third round against Justo Almazan. A TKO happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer can't safely continue.

Austin continued to win his early fights, often by knockout. By the end of 2007, he had won all 13 of his professional fights, with 10 of those wins coming by knockout. In November 2009, he won his first major title, the WBC Continental Americas light middleweight title.

Becoming a World Champion

Austin Trout became a world champion on February 5, 2011. He fought Rigoberto Álvarez for the WBA (Regular) light middleweight title in Mexico. Austin won the fight easily by a unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he was the clear winner. This was a huge moment in his career!

Defending His Title

After becoming champion, Austin successfully defended his WBA title several times.

  • Against David Alonso López: In June 2011, he defended his title against David Alonso López. Austin won by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
  • Against Frank LoPorto: In November 2011, he faced Frank LoPorto. Austin won this fight by TKO in the sixth round.
  • Against Delvin Rodriguez: In June 2012, Austin fought Delvin Rodriguez. He completely dominated the fight, winning by a wide unanimous decision.

Big Win Against Miguel Cotto

One of Austin's biggest wins came on December 1, 2012, when he defended his title against the famous boxer Miguel Cotto. The fight took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Austin fought a smart fight, using his speed and movement. He won by a clear unanimous decision. This was a huge victory for Austin, as Cotto had never lost at that arena before!

Tough Losses and Comeback

Fights Against Top Opponents

After his win against Cotto, Austin faced two very tough opponents and lost both fights.

  • Against Canelo Álvarez: On April 20, 2013, Austin fought the undefeated Canelo Álvarez. Canelo won the fight by unanimous decision, even knocking Austin down in the seventh round. This was the first time Austin had been knocked down in his career.
  • Against Erislandy Lara: In December 2013, Austin fought Erislandy Lara for another WBA title. Lara won by unanimous decision, also knocking Austin down in the eleventh round.

Getting Back on Track

After these two losses, Austin took some time off. He then started his "comeback trail" to try and win another world title. He won several fights in a row, showing he was still a top boxer. He beat Daniel Dawson, Luis Grajeda, Luis Galarza, and Joey Hernandez.

More Title Challenges

Austin continued to challenge for world titles, even after his losses.

  • Against Jermall Charlo: In May 2016, Austin fought Jermall Charlo for the IBF light middleweight title. It was a very close fight, but Charlo won by unanimous decision. Many fans felt Austin should have won.
  • Against Jarrett Hurd: In October 2017, Austin challenged Jarrett Hurd for the IBF light middleweight title. Austin fought hard, but his corner stopped the fight after the tenth round to protect him. This was the first time Austin had been stopped in a professional boxing match.
  • Against Jermell Charlo: In June 2018, Austin fought Jermell Charlo for the WBC light middleweight title. Charlo won by majority decision, knocking Austin down twice.

Recent Boxing Fights

Austin Trout continued to fight after 2018. In May 2019, he had a draw (a tie) against Terrell Gausha. He then won his next few fights, including a TKO win against Rosbel Montoya in February 2020 and a unanimous decision win against Juan Armando Garcia in February 2021. He also won fights in 2022 and 2023.

Bare-Knuckle Boxing

In addition to traditional boxing, Austin Trout has also competed in bare-knuckle boxing, where fighters punch without gloves.

  • On February 17, 2023, he won his first bare-knuckle fight against Diego Sanchez.
  • On February 2, 2024, Austin defeated Luis Palomino to become the new BKFC welterweight champion.
  • He successfully defended his BKFC Welterweight Championship against Ricardo Franco on October 12, 2024.
