Jarrett Hurd's Boxing Journey
Starting as an Amateur Boxer
Jarrett Hurd grew up in Accokeek, Maryland, and went to Gwynn Park High School. He wasn't a famous amateur boxer, but he still had a good record. He won 32 fights and lost 8 in his 40 amateur matches.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Even though Hurd wasn't a top amateur, a boxing promoter named Ross Molovinsky saw his potential. Hurd started his professional boxing career in September 2012.
Early Fights and First TV Appearance
Hurd won his first 16 fights in a row! Then, he made his TV debut on "ShoBox: The New Generation." He fought against another undefeated boxer, Frank Galarza. Hurd started slowly but then took control of the fight. He used his jab and movement to outsmart Galarza. After six rounds, the referee stopped the fight, giving Hurd a TKO win.
In May 2016, Hurd was set to fight Óscar Molina at the Barclays Center in New York. This fight was originally not going to be on TV. However, it was moved to be the opening fight on CBS just three days before the event. Hurd won the fight against Molina with a TKO in the tenth round. He even knocked Molina down in the first round.
Later that year, Hurd was supposed to fight Jorge Cota. But Cota had to drop out because of an emergency surgery. Jo Jo Dan stepped in to fight Hurd instead. The fight took place in November 2016 in Philadelphia. Hurd won with a TKO in the sixth round. He used strong combinations to overwhelm Dan.
Winning the IBF Light Middleweight Title
Hurd vs. Harrison for the Title
In January 2017, it was announced that Hurd would fight Tony Harrison for the vacant IBF light middleweight title. The fight happened in February in Birmingham, Alabama. Hurd won the title by defeating Harrison. Hurd struggled a bit at the start, but as the fight went on, Harrison couldn't handle Hurd's power. Hurd knocked Harrison down with a right hook, and Harrison couldn't continue.
First Title Defense Against Austin Trout
For his first title defense, Hurd fought against former world champion Austin Trout. The fight took place on October 14, 2017, at the Barclays Center in New York. Trout started well, using his jabs and moving around. But in the middle rounds, Hurd made the fight more of a brawl. Both boxers traded powerful punches. Hurd seemed strong and wasn't bothered by Trout's punches. Trout's right eye started to swell. After the tenth round, Trout's team stopped the fight to protect him. This was the first time Trout had been stopped in his professional career.
Becoming a Unified Light Middleweight Champion
Hurd Unifies Titles Against Lara
On April 7, 2018, Hurd had a big fight against Erislandy Lara. Lara was the WBA (Super) and IBO champion. This fight was to unify (combine) their titles. Hurd won the fight by a split decision after 12 rounds. This means two judges scored it for Hurd, and one for Lara. The most important moment was when Hurd knocked Lara down in the final round. Lara was hurt but managed to get up. This knockdown was the deciding factor in the close fight.
With this win, Hurd became a unified world champion. He joined famous boxers like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Álvarez who had also unified titles in this weight class. Even though Lara wanted a rematch, Hurd decided to move on to bigger fights.
Defending Titles Against Welborn
In June 2018, Hurd had surgery on his shoulder, which was injured before his fight with Lara. He returned to the ring in December 2018 against British boxer Jason Welborn. The fight took place in Los Angeles, California. Hurd knocked Welborn out in the fourth round to keep his light middleweight titles. Welborn started aggressively, but Hurd eventually landed a hard body shot that dropped Welborn.
Losing Titles to Julian Williams
Hurd's next title defense was on May 11, 2019, against Julian Williams. Both boxers fought very aggressively. Williams performed better than Hurd, even knocking him down in the second round. All three judges scored the fight for Williams, giving Hurd his first professional loss. Hurd lost his WBA (Super), IBF, and IBO light middleweight titles.
Comeback Fight Against Santana
In his comeback fight on January 25, 2020, Hurd fought Francisco Santana. In this fight, Hurd showed a different style, fighting more from a distance. He dominated the fight and even knocked Santana down in the final round. Hurd won the fight by a unanimous decision.
Hurd vs. Arias
On June 6, 2021, Hurd faced Luis Arias. Hurd knocked Arias down in the ninth round. However, he lost the fight by a split decision. This means two judges scored it for Arias, and one for Hurd.
