Jarrett Hurd's Boxing Journey
Early Life and Amateur Fights
Jarrett Hurd grew up in Accokeek, Maryland. He went to Gwynn Park High School. As an amateur boxer, he had a record of 32 wins and 8 losses in 40 fights. This was a good start, but he wasn't a huge star yet.
Starting His Professional Career
Even though he wasn't a famous amateur, Jarrett Hurd was seen as a promising boxer. He had his first professional fight in September 2012. He won his first 16 fights in a row!
His first big TV fight was against Frank Galarza. Hurd started slowly but then took control. He used his jab and moved well. The referee stopped the fight in the sixth round, giving Hurd a TKO win. A boxing expert, Steve Farhood, praised Hurd's great performance.
In May 2016, Hurd fought former Olympian Óscar Molina. This fight was part of a big boxing event. Hurd won by TKO in the tenth round. He even knocked Molina down in the first round with an uppercut.
Later that year, Hurd was set to fight Jorge Cota. But Cota had to pull out due to surgery. Jo Jo Dan stepped in to fight Hurd instead. Hurd won this fight too, with a TKO in the sixth round. He used strong combinations to overwhelm Dan.
Becoming a World Champion
Winning the IBF Title
On February 25, 2017, Jarrett Hurd fought Tony Harrison for the vacant IBF light middleweight title. Hurd won the title by TKO in the ninth round. He struggled a bit early on, but Harrison couldn't handle Hurd's power as the fight went on. Hurd knocked Harrison down with a right hook, and Harrison couldn't continue.
First Title Defense Against Austin Trout
Hurd's first defense of his IBF title was against former world champion Austin Trout. The fight happened on October 14, 2017. Trout started well, using his jab and moving around. But Hurd started to land powerful punches. The fight became a tough brawl. Hurd seemed strong, even when Trout hit him. Trout's eye started to swell. After the tenth round, Trout's team stopped the fight to protect him. This was the first time Trout had been stopped in his professional career.
Becoming a Unified Champion
Unifying Titles Against Erislandy Lara
On April 7, 2018, Jarrett Hurd had a huge fight against Erislandy Lara. Lara was the WBA (Super) and IBO champion. This fight was to unify the titles, meaning the winner would hold more than one world championship belt.
Hurd won the fight by a close split decision after 12 rounds. It was a very exciting fight! In the final round, Hurd knocked Lara down with a left hook. This knockdown was the key moment that helped Hurd win. Lara was a skilled counter-puncher, while Hurd used his strength to land powerful shots. With this win, Hurd became a unified light middleweight champion. He joined a special group of boxers who held multiple titles in his weight class.
After the fight, Lara wanted a rematch, but Hurd decided to move on. He wanted to try and become the undisputed champion, holding all the major belts.
Defending Against Jason Welborn
In June 2018, Hurd had shoulder surgery. He returned to the ring on December 1, 2018, to defend his titles against British boxer Jason Welborn. Hurd won by knockout in the fourth round. Welborn started aggressively, but Hurd landed a hard body shot that dropped Welborn. Welborn couldn't get up in time, and the referee stopped the fight. After the fight, another champion, Jermell Charlo, came into the ring, suggesting he wanted to fight Hurd next.
Losing the Titles to Julian Williams
Hurd's next title defense was on May 11, 2019, against Julian Williams. This was another very exciting fight. Williams fought aggressively and even knocked Hurd down in the second round.
