Starting His Boxing Journey
Julian Williams began boxing when he was 12 years old. As an amateur boxer, he had a very good record of 77 wins and only 10 losses. He even reached the top five in national rankings. However, he never won a national tournament. His trainer, Stephen Edwards, noticed that Julian's training was not always consistent. So, when Julian became a professional boxer, they started a much stricter training plan.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Julian Williams had his first professional fight in May 2010. He won by technical knockout (TKO) in the very first round against Antonio Chaves Fernandez. A TKO happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer cannot continue safely.
In April 2013, Julian won another fight by TKO in the third round. This improved his record to 12 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw. After that, he faced former world champion Joachim Alcine. Julian won this fight by a unanimous decision. This means all three judges agreed that Julian was the winner. Even though Alcine was knocked down three times, he fought back hard in the final rounds. Julian survived and took the win.
Big Fights and Championships
On December 10, 2016, Julian Williams fought Jermall Charlo for the IBF light middleweight title. Charlo won the fight in the fifth round. He knocked Julian down twice. After the fight, Julian went to congratulate Charlo, but Charlo seemed upset. He told Julian he wanted an apology, saying Julian had disrespected him before the fight. The crowd booed Charlo because of his reaction.
A big moment for Julian came on May 11, 2019. He fought Jarrett Hurd for the unified light middleweight championship. This was a very exciting fight, with both boxers fighting hard. Julian managed to knock Hurd down in the second round and performed better throughout the match. Julian won by unanimous decision, becoming a world champion!
In his first defense of his new titles, Julian faced Jeison Rosario. Rosario was highly ranked by boxing organizations. Julian started the fight well, but Rosario looked stronger. In the fifth round, Rosario landed many powerful punches. The referee had to stop the fight, and Rosario won, which was a big surprise to many.
Julian Williams is scheduled to fight Yoenis Tellez for an interim title on March 1, 2025. This fight will take place in Brooklyn, New York.
