On March 28, 2015, Charlo faced Michael Finney. Charlo won every round and earned a unanimous decision victory. This showed he could win even when the fight went the full distance.
Winning a World Title
In September 2015, Charlo fought Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF light middleweight title. Charlo won the title with a powerful knockout in the third round. He knocked Bundrage down multiple times during the fight. This was a big moment for Charlo, as he became a world champion.
Defending His Title
A few weeks after winning the title, Charlo defended it against Wilky Campfort in November 2015. Charlo knocked Campfort down twice. The fight was stopped in the fourth round because Campfort could not see properly after a strong punch.
In May 2016, Charlo defended his title against former world champion Austin Trout. It was a close fight, but Charlo won by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. He landed harder punches, especially in the first half of the fight.
Charlo's next title defense was against Julian Williams in December 2016. Charlo kept his IBF light middleweight title by stopping Williams in the fifth round. He knocked Williams down with a strong jab in the second round. In the fifth round, Charlo landed a powerful uppercut that dropped Williams again. The referee stopped the fight after another series of punches.
Moving to Middleweight
In February 2017, Charlo decided to move up to the middleweight division. He had been finding it hard to make the light middleweight limit. He wanted to challenge himself and fight bigger names.
Becoming a Mandatory Challenger
On July 29, 2017, Charlo fought Jorge Sebastian Heiland in a fight to decide who would be the mandatory challenger for the WBC middleweight title. Charlo won by stopping Heiland in the fourth round. In June 2021, Charlo defended his title against Juan Macias Montiel. Charlo won by unanimous decision, keeping control throughout the fight. Montiel landed some strong body shots, but Charlo's power punches were too much.
Time Away and Return to Boxing
After his fight in June 2021, Charlo faced a period of inactivity. He had to deal with personal challenges and injuries, including a back injury. The WBC, the boxing organization, supported him during this time. They understood that taking time off for well-being was important.
In November 2023, Charlo returned to the ring to fight José Benavidez Jr.. This was a non-title fight at a slightly heavier weight. Charlo won the fight by unanimous decision, showing he was still a sharp and dominant boxer. This was his first fight in 29 months.
Losing the WBC Title
In May 2024, the WBC decided to strip Charlo of his middleweight title. This meant he no longer held the championship. The WBC explained that they had been patient with his inactivity but needed to move forward. They still offered to support him as he continued his boxing journey.
