Jermall Charlo (born May 19, 1990) is an American professional boxer. He has won world championships in two different weight classes. He held the International Boxing Federation (IBF) light middleweight title from 2015 to 2017. He also held the World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight title from 2019 to 2024. His identical twin brother, Jermell Charlo, is also a professional boxer.

Early Life and Boxing Start

Jermall is the older twin brother of Jermell Charlo. They both went to Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas. They started boxing because they followed their dad, who was also a boxer, to the gym.

Amateur Boxing Days

As an amateur boxer, Jermall hoped to join the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. However, he had to stop because of a toe injury. He continued boxing as an amateur for one more year. He finished with a great record of 65 wins and only 6 losses.

Professional Boxing Journey

Jermall Charlo started his professional boxing career in 2008. He quickly became known for his powerful punches and undefeated record.

Light Middleweight Division

Jermall began his professional journey in the light middleweight division.

Starting His Career Strong

On August 12, 2008, Charlo had his first professional fight. He won by technical knockout in the second round. He continued to win against various opponents, often by knockout. By the end of 2014, Charlo had won all 20 of his fights. Many of these wins came by knockout.

On March 28, 2015, Charlo faced Michael Finney. Charlo won every round and earned a unanimous decision victory. This showed he could win even when the fight went the full distance.

Winning a World Title

In September 2015, Charlo fought Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF light middleweight title. Charlo won the title with a powerful knockout in the third round. He knocked Bundrage down multiple times during the fight. This was a big moment for Charlo, as he became a world champion.

Defending His Title

A few weeks after winning the title, Charlo defended it against Wilky Campfort in November 2015. Charlo knocked Campfort down twice. The fight was stopped in the fourth round because Campfort could not see properly after a strong punch.

In May 2016, Charlo defended his title against former world champion Austin Trout. It was a close fight, but Charlo won by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. He landed harder punches, especially in the first half of the fight.

Charlo's next title defense was against Julian Williams in December 2016. Charlo kept his IBF light middleweight title by stopping Williams in the fifth round. He knocked Williams down with a strong jab in the second round. In the fifth round, Charlo landed a powerful uppercut that dropped Williams again. The referee stopped the fight after another series of punches.

Moving to Middleweight

In February 2017, Charlo decided to move up to the middleweight division. He had been finding it hard to make the light middleweight limit. He wanted to challenge himself and fight bigger names.

Becoming a Mandatory Challenger

On July 29, 2017, Charlo fought Jorge Sebastian Heiland in a fight to decide who would be the mandatory challenger for the WBC middleweight title. Charlo won by stopping Heiland in the fourth round. Heiland had an injured leg, which made it difficult for him to continue. This win made Charlo the top challenger for the WBC middleweight title.

Winning an Interim Title

In April 2018, Charlo fought Hugo Centeno Jr. for the Interim WBC middleweight title. Charlo won the title by knocking out Centeno in the second round. He landed a strong left hook followed by a right hand. After this win, Charlo called out other top middleweight champions.

First Interim Title Defense

In December 2018, Charlo defended his WBC interim middleweight title against Matt Korobov. Charlo won by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. It was a challenging fight, and Korobov landed many good punches. Charlo showed his toughness and managed to win the later rounds.

Becoming Full WBC Champion

In June 2019, Charlo fought Brandon Adams in his hometown of Houston. During the week of the fight, Charlo was made the full WBC middleweight champion. He won the fight by a clear unanimous decision, dominating most of the rounds.

Continuing His Reign

In December 2019, Charlo defended his title against Irish boxer Dennis Hogan. Charlo delivered a spectacular knockout in the seventh round. He knocked Hogan down twice during the fight, showing his powerful punching ability.

In September 2020, Charlo faced Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who was considered his toughest opponent yet. Charlo used his powerful jab and height advantage to win by unanimous decision after 12 rounds. It was a tough fight, but Charlo's punches were more accurate.

In June 2021, Charlo defended his title against Juan Macias Montiel. Charlo won by unanimous decision, keeping control throughout the fight. Montiel landed some strong body shots, but Charlo's power punches were too much.

Time Away and Return to Boxing

After his fight in June 2021, Charlo faced a period of inactivity. He had to deal with personal challenges and injuries, including a back injury. The WBC, the boxing organization, supported him during this time. They understood that taking time off for well-being was important.

In November 2023, Charlo returned to the ring to fight José Benavidez Jr.. This was a non-title fight at a slightly heavier weight. Charlo won the fight by unanimous decision, showing he was still a sharp and dominant boxer. This was his first fight in 29 months.

Losing the WBC Title

In May 2024, the WBC decided to strip Charlo of his middleweight title. This meant he no longer held the championship. The WBC explained that they had been patient with his inactivity but needed to move forward. They still offered to support him as he continued his boxing journey.

Super Middleweight Division

After losing his middleweight title, Charlo moved up to the super middleweight division.

New Beginnings

In May 2025, Charlo made his return to the ring in the super middleweight division against Thomas LaManna. He won the fight by TKO in the fifth round, scoring three knockdowns. This victory showed that Charlo was back and ready to compete in a new weight class.
