A Look at Its History
Plans for building this resort were first shared in April 2004. The land for the hotel was bought for $90 million. It was an 8.5-acre area shaped like a "U." It surrounded another building called the Jockey Club. The name "Cosmopolitan" was announced in November 2004.
The team that designed the Cosmopolitan was led by Friedmutter Group. Arquitectonica helped design the outside of the building. The inside was designed by several teams.
The resort was built where the parking lot for the Jockey Club used to be. Because of this, people living at the Jockey Club can use part of the Cosmopolitan's parking garage. The Cosmopolitan was the second hotel in Las Vegas to have an underground parking garage. The parking garage was built first.
The hotel was originally going to be called the Grand Hyatt Las Vegas. It was planned that the casino would be on the second floor. But this idea changed, and the casino was built on the ground floor. This is how most other Las Vegas hotels are set up.
Changes and Challenges
In 2008, the project faced some money problems. But construction continued while new ways to pay for it were found. Later, a bank bought the hotel for $1 billion. They then hired a company to help manage the building process. This company suggested many changes. One big change was to move the casino entrance closer to the Las Vegas Strip.
In June 2008, a magazine called Cosmopolitan filed a lawsuit. They owned the trademark to the name. In March 2010, the problem was solved. The resort was then officially named Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
In 2008 and 2009, several big hotel companies talked about buying the property. These included MGM Mirage, Starwood, Hyatt, and Hilton. But these plans changed.
The Cosmopolitan opened in stages. It started in December 2010 and finished in July 2011. It was the only new hotel-casino to open on the Strip in 2010. The resort became part of Marriott International's Autograph Collection. This means it's an independent hotel but guests can use Marriott's booking and rewards system.
In May 2014, the Cosmopolitan was sold to Blackstone Group for $1.73 billion.
On July 25, 2015, a small fire started on the pool deck of the resort. It burned some trees and cabanas. Smoke went into the air. Two people needed help because of the smoke. The reason for the fire was not known right away.
Places to Eat
The Cosmopolitan has many different restaurants. In March 2010, they announced several famous chefs would open restaurants there. These included Blue Ribbon, Estiatorio Milos, and Scarpetta.
On May 2, the resort shared that José Andrés would open three restaurants. These are "é by José Andrés," Jaleo, and China Poblano. China Poblano mixes Mexican and Chinese food.
Other restaurants include D.O.C.G., a wine bar, and Holstein's, which serves special burgers. You can also find STK, a steakhouse, along with The Henry, Va Bene Caffè, and Wicked Spoon. The Cosmopolitan also added Eggslut in 2011, which is famous for its egg dishes. A Starbucks also opened in the hotel in 2015.
A modern supper club called Rose, Rabbit, Lie was added in 2015. It offers nice meals, live shows, and special drinks. In 2018, new restaurants were added at Block 16 Urban Food Hall. These include Hattie B's Hot Chicken and Pok Pok Wing. Christina Tosi also opened a Milk Bar there, serving desserts and snacks.
Fun Shows to See
The show "Opium" is currently playing at the Cosmopolitan. It is put on by a group called Spiegelworld. This show takes place on a spaceship called OPM 73. The crew performs many unique and amazing acts. The audience sits around a stage that moves up and down during the show. Sometimes, people from the audience get to join in. There is a bar before the show starts, and there are no breaks during the performance. Spiegelworld also has another show called Absinthe at Caesars Palace.
