What Was the Australian Federation of Women Voters?
The idea for this group began at a meeting in Perth in 1918. This meeting was for the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. By 1921, the AFWV was officially created.
Key Leaders and Activities
Bessie Rischbieth was the first president of the AFWV. The organization had its own magazine called The Dawn.
The AFWV helped Australian women speak up on a global stage.
- In 1922, they helped the first Australian woman attend the League of Nations. The League of Nations was a group of countries working for peace.
- Australian women also attended the League of Nations in 1928, 1935, and 1936.
Fighting for Women's Rights
The AFWV also worked to fight unfair treatment in Australia.
- In 1937, they wrote a special report called "Status of Women." This report was about sex discrimination in Australia.
- They wrote another report ten years later, in 1947.
The End of the AFWV
The Australian Federation of Women Voters continued its work for many years. In 1972, the organization came to an end. Its work then became part of another group called the Women's Electoral Lobby.
