Avaí's Story
The club began when a businessman named Amadeu Horn gave football kits to some boys. These boys played a game against a team called Humaitá and won! Because of this win, the club was officially started on September 1, 1923. It was first called Avahy Football Club. The name "Avahy" comes from the Battle of Avahy, which happened during the Paraguayan War. The very next year, Avaí became the first champion of the Santa Catarina State Championship.
Playing in Brazil's Top Leagues
Avaí has played in Brazil's top football league, the Brazilian First Division (called "Série A"), four times. These were in 1974, 1976, 1977, and 1979. In 1998, they won their only national title, the Brazilian Third Division ("Série C").
Since 1999, Avaí has mostly played in the Série B, which is the Second Division. They did very well in 2001 and 2004, reaching the "Final Four" stage. However, they couldn't move up to the First Division because only the top two teams were promoted. Avaí holds the record for winning the most Santa Catarina State Championships in the 20th century, with 13 titles!
