Built 16th century

Avochie Castle is an old, ruined castle in Scotland. It's a type of building called a tower house. It was built a long time ago, in the 1500s or early 1600s.

You can find it about 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) north of Huntly. It sits to the east of the River Deveron in Aberdeenshire. A newer house, Avochie House, is located just to the west.

History of Avochie Castle

A long time ago, Avochie Castle belonged to a powerful family. This family was known as the Gordons of Avochie. They were important during the reigns of Mary, Queen of Scots and her son, King James VI. These were times of big changes in Scottish history.

Later, in 1871, a person named Adam Hay Gordon owned the property.

What Remains of Avochie Castle Today?

Today, only parts of the castle walls remain. You can still see the pointed ends of the roof, called 'gable ends'. There's also a special small turret, called a 'bartizan', that sticks out from the wall on the southeast side. It's supported by stone brackets called 'corbels'.

Some people say it was quite small for a 'castle'. It was a rectangular building, not much taller than two floors. It measured about 13.7 meters (45 feet) long and 6.4 meters (21 feet) wide.

Avochie Castle is considered an important historical site. It is protected as a category B listed building. This means it has special historical or architectural value.
