The Avon River is a cool river in Perth County, Ontario, Canada. It got its name from another River Avon in England. This happened when the town of Stratford was started right next to it in 1832. The Avon River begins northeast of Stratford and flows southwest. It eventually joins the North Thames River near St. Marys. Long ago, people called it the Little Thames River.

Where Does the Avon River Flow?

The Avon River starts in a field. This field is northeast of a small place called Shakespeare in Perth East. The river then flows west. It goes north of Shakespeare and south of Brocksden. Then, it flows into Lake Victoria in Stratford. Lake Victoria is a special lake created by the Thomas Orr Dam. It holds water at certain times of the year.

The Avon River continues its journey west. It passes through a community called Avonton in Perth South. After that, it heads south through the community of Avonbank. Finally, it empties into the North Thames River. It joins as a left branch, between Motherwell to the north and St. Marys to the south.

What Are the Avon River's Tributaries?

A tributary is a smaller stream or river. It flows into a larger river. The Avon River has several smaller streams that join it along its path. These smaller waterways add water to the main river.

Here are some of the streams that flow into the Avon River:

  • Dunseith Drain
  • Douglas Drain
  • Hislop Drain
  • Court Drain
  • Kuhne Drain
  • Central School Drain
  • Sheerer Drain
