The Awaroa River is a short but important river located in the far north of New Zealand. It flows into the Tasman Sea.

The Awaroa River: A Northern New Zealand Waterway

This Awaroa River is found about 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of a town called Kaitaia. It flows towards the southwest for about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi). Finally, it reaches the Tasman Sea just north of the Hokianga Harbour.

Its mouth forms one of the two arms of Whangape Harbour. The other arm is formed by the estuary of the Rotokakahi River.

What Does "Awaroa" Mean?

The name Awaroa comes from the Māori language. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage explains that "Awaroa" means "long river".

Other Rivers Named Awaroa

It's interesting to know that there are also two other rivers with the same name, Awaroa, located in the Waikato region of New Zealand. One of these Waikato rivers flows into Kawhia Harbour, and the other flows into the Waikato River itself.
