Axams is a town in Tyrol, Austria. It is part of the Innsbruck Land area.
The name "Axams" comes from an old Celtic language. It means "Place in the height." The town's emblem shows a golden top on a blue background. Long ago, growing flax was important here. Axams has grown bigger in recent years.

Axams is in a beautiful mountain area. It's about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of the city of Innsbruck.

Axams is surrounded by several other towns. These include Oberperfuss, Grinzens, Götzens, Kematen in Tirol, Unterperfuss, and Birgitz.
Mountains and Rivers
South of Axams, you'll find the Axamer Lizum and the Kalkkögel mountains. These areas are part of the town's land. To the north is the Zirler Berg mountain. Two streams, the Sendersbach and the Ruifachbach, flow past Axams.
Recent History
Axams has a rich history with many important events.
Early 20th Century
- 1904-1905: Axams started getting electricity. This was a big step for the town.
- 1917: During World War I, the church bells were taken. Their metal was used to help with the war effort.
- 1926: A regular bus service began, making travel easier.
- 1927: A children's home opened in the region.
Mid-20th Century
- 1948: The local church received a new bell.
- 1956-1958: The parish church was repaired and made new again.
- 1962-1963: A road was built connecting Axams to the Axamer Lizum area. This made it easier to reach the mountains.
Olympic Games and Development
- 1964: Axamer Lizum hosted many alpine skiing events for the Olympic Winter Games.
- 1976: The area was used again for the Winter Games.
- 1980: Axams became the main town for its local church district.
- 1983: A large mudslide happened in the area.
- 1998: The Axamer Lizum ski area got a new system to make snow. This helps ensure good skiing conditions.
- 2007: The main school in Axams was updated and made larger.
Recent Discussions
- 2009-2015: There were talks about joining the Axamer Lizum ski area with another area called Schlick 2000. This idea was debated a lot. In the end, the government said it wasn't possible by law.
- 2016: Plans were announced for a small power plant. This plant would use water to create electricity at the edge of the village.
