The Ayacucho thistletail (Asthenes ayacuchensis) is a small bird that belongs to the Furnariidae family. It lives only in a specific part of northern Ayacucho, Peru. This means it is endemic to that area, found nowhere else in the world.
Where the Ayacucho Thistletail Lives
This special bird makes its home in certain natural habitats. You can find the Ayacucho thistletail in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It also lives in subtropical or tropical high-altitude grasslands. These are places high up in the mountains where the air is often cool and moist.
How Scientists Study the Ayacucho Thistletail
For a while, scientists thought the Ayacucho thistletail was just a type of Vilcabamba thistletail (Asthenes vilcabambae). But in 2015, a new study was published. This study looked closely at the birds' DNA and listened to their calls.
Scientists compared the Ayacucho thistletail to other birds in the Asthenes group. They found that the Ayacucho thistletail was actually more like the eye-ringed thistletail. It was not as similar to the Vilcabamba thistletail as they first thought. Because of this new information, scientists decided that the Ayacucho thistletail is its own unique species.
