Ayne Bru facts for kids
Ayne Bru (sometimes called Aine Bru) was a famous painter from the 1500s. He was born in Germany but worked in Catalonia, a region in Spain. His real name might have been Hans Brün, and he might have come from a place called Lummen in what is now Belgium. Some people also knew him as Lucius de Brun.
In 1502, Ayne Bru was hired for a very important job: to paint the main altar for the church at the Sant Cugat del Vallès monastery. He was paid a lot of money for this work between 1504 and 1507.

The Sant Cugat Altarpiece
Ayne Bru's most famous painting is the central part of the Sant Cugat altarpiece. It shows the sad story of Saint Cucuphas (called Sant Cugat in Catalan). Bru painted this scene with amazing realism, making it look very true to life.
What the Painting Shows
In the painting, an executioner is cutting the saint's throat while Saint Cucuphas is tied to a tree trunk. You can also see another knife in a basket nearby and a dog sleeping peacefully, which adds to the realistic feel. This important artwork is now kept at the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona.
The Background and Other Panels
The painting's background shows a large countryside scene. Interestingly, it includes the actual monastery of Sant Cugat, even though the event happened long before the monastery was built. Another part of the altarpiece shows Saint George, a brave warrior saint. This panel has been put back together with the main painting and can also be seen at the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
Ayne Bru's Artistic Style
Experts like Marcel Durliat believe that Ayne Bru's paintings show influences from different places. The strong feelings and expressions in his art might come from his German background. However, the way he painted figures standing in modern clothes, and other small details, suggest that he might have lived or studied in Northern Italy before he moved to Barcelona. This mix of styles made his art unique.
