The Provisional Government of Free India, also known as Azad Hind, was a special government set up by Indian nationalists during World War II. It was formed in Singapore in 1943. This government wanted to free India from British rule.

Azad Hind worked closely with its ally, Japan. They fought together in the Burma campaign, which was a major part of the war in Asia. After World War II ended in 1945, the Provisional Government of Free India stopped existing.

Who Led Azad Hind?

The most famous leader of Azad Hind was Subhas Chandra Bose. He was a very important Indian nationalist. Bose believed that India could only become free with the help of other countries. He sought support from Japan and Germany during World War II.

Why Was it Formed in Singapore?

Singapore was chosen because it was under Japanese control during the war. Japan supported the idea of an independent India. They saw it as a way to weaken the British. This made Singapore a safe place for Azad Hind to be established.

Azad Hind played a role in World War II. It was an ally of Japan and the other Axis powers.

Fighting for Freedom: The Indian National Army

Azad Hind had its own army, called the Indian National Army (INA). This army was made up of Indian soldiers. Many of them were prisoners of war captured by Japan. They joined the INA to fight for India's freedom.

The Burma Campaign

The Indian National Army fought alongside Japanese forces. They took part in the Burma campaign. This was a series of battles in Burma (now Myanmar). The INA hoped to march into India and spark a rebellion against the British.

Why Did Azad Hind Stop Existing?

When World War II ended in 1945, Japan was defeated. Without Japan's support, Azad Hind could no longer continue. The Indian National Army was also defeated. Many of its soldiers were captured.
