The Bäckaby Old Church (in Swedish: Bäckaby gamla kyrka) was a special wooden church building in Sweden. Its oldest parts were built around the 1320s, making it very old! This historic church was first located in Bäckaby, near Vetlanda.
Later, a private person bought it. The church was then carefully moved to the town park in Jönköping. It was reopened there on August 31, 1902. A newer church, called Bäckaby Church, had replaced it in Bäckaby in 1899.
The Church's Sad End
On the evening of April 28, 2000, something terrible happened. The Bäckaby Old Church was completely destroyed by a fire. It was later found that the fire was started on purpose. This event was very sad for many people.
Why Was the Church Important?
The Bäckaby Old Church was a much-loved place. Many families chose it for important events. It was a popular spot for weddings and baptisms. Its destruction meant a great loss to the community.
A Place to Remember
Even though the church is gone, its memory lives on. In 2003, a special memorial site was opened. This place helps people remember the historic Bäckaby Old Church and its long history.
