A Look Back: How the BK XXL Started
How Burger King Advertised These Burgers
Burger King created special advertisements for the BK XXL burgers. For example, ads for the XXL bacon double cheeseburger described it as a huge burger with "two enormous portions of flame-broiled meat." The ads suggested it would give you lots of energy. One ad even had a funny line saying, "It's awful being a vegetarian, right?"
However, the Spanish government was concerned about these ads. They felt that promoting such large burgers didn't fit with their plans to encourage healthier eating habits for people in the country.
In Germany, an ad for the Cheesy Bacon XXL used a song from an older Burger King commercial. They changed the words to mention the Cheesy Bacon XXL instead of the original burger. The ad was sung completely in English, even though it was shown in Germany.
