Discovering Baños: A Look at Its Past

Long ago, even before the Spanish arrived, people lived in Baños. The Cañaris people probably settled here. They were drawn to the natural hot springs in the area. These hot waters were a valuable resource for them.

In the 1600s, during the colonial period, Spanish explorers came. They found gold and silver mines in the area. Over time, Spanish settlers and local people married. More land was bought and sold, and the population grew. This led to different parts of Baños forming.

Later, in 1824, Baños was seen as a rural area of Cuenca. But it wasn't until September 1, 1852, that it officially became a rural parish. This made it a legal part of the Cuenca canton.
