Babenhausen is a town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg area of Germany. It is located in the state of Hesse.

Where is Babenhausen?

Babenhausen is in the Rhine-Main area. This is a busy region about 35 kilometers southeast of Frankfurt. The town covers an area of 66.87 square kilometers. It is 127 meters above sea level, which means it's a flat area with no big hills.

Millions of years ago, about 35 to 20 million years ago, this whole area was under the sea. It was a warm, shallow ocean. Over time, lots of sand and other materials settled at the bottom. Later, the land rose up, and the water went away. This left behind soil that is mostly sandy.

The town of Babenhausen includes the main town and five smaller villages. These villages used to be separate. Their names are Hergershausen, Harpertshausen, Harreshausen, Sickenhofen, and Langstadt.

Babenhausen has several neighbors:

  • To the north: Rodgau, Seligenstadt, and Mainhausen
  • To the east: Stockstadt and Großostheim
  • To the south: Schaafheim and Groß-Umstadt
  • To the west: Münster and Eppertshausen

In 2008, about 16,066 people lived in Babenhausen. The weather in the town is usually mild. It doesn't get as much rain as some other parts of Germany.

Some local people speak a special way of German. It's a Hessian dialect. This dialect has a unique sound and some special words. It's spoken in southern Hesse. Long ago, almost every town had its own dialect. Today, fewer people speak the old dialect. Most people speak regular German, but with a local accent.

A Look at Babenhausen's History

Babenhausen and its nearby villages have been places where people lived for a very long time. In the 7th to 9th centuries, new settlements often got names ending in -hausen or -stadt. But at that time, these names were not written down.

The name Babenhausen first appeared in a written paper in 1236. About 50 years later, in 1295, Babenhausen was given town privileges. This meant it had special rights, like holding markets and building walls.

During the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the town suffered a lot. Soldiers caused much damage. Many people also died from sickness and hunger.

For a long time, most people in the Babenhausen area were farmers or craftsmen. They were not usually involved in trade. Each family owned land to grow their food. When land was passed down to children, it was often divided. This meant many families had very small farms and were not rich.

Later, the Industrial Revolution changed things. The Rhine-Main area became a center for factories. Many men found jobs in these factories. They worked with metal, made leather goods, or processed chemicals. Getting these jobs helped improve living conditions for many families.

During World War II, Babenhausen became a place where soldiers captured in battle were held. These were called war prisoners. After World War II, Babenhausen also became a temporary home for many Jewish people. These individuals had been held in special camps during the war. They stayed in Babenhausen after being freed.
