Geography of Eppertshausen
Eppertshausen is part of the Rhine-Main area, a large region in Germany. It is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the city of Darmstadt. The town covers an area of 13.11 square kilometers (5.06 sq mi).
Landscape and Elevation
The land in Eppertshausen is mostly flat, but it does have a few small hills. The town sits between 130 and 190 meters (426-623 feet) above sea level.
Ancient Seas and Soil
Millions of years ago, about 35 to 20 million years ago, this entire region was covered by a warm, shallow ocean. Over time, lots of sediment (like sand and mud) settled at the bottom of this sea. Later, the land rose, and the water left. This left behind soil that is mostly sandy and not very rich for farming.
Neighboring Towns
Eppertshausen has several towns as its neighbors:
- Rödermark and Rodgau are to the north. These towns are in the Offenbach Rural District.
- Babenhausen is located to the east.
- Münster is to the south.
- Messel is found to the west.
Population and Climate
As of 2008, Eppertshausen had 5,829 people living there. The town enjoys a mild climate. It generally receives less rain compared to other parts of Germany.
Local Dialect and Language
Some people in Eppertshausen speak a special regional type of German, known as a dialect. This dialect is called Hessisch and is spoken in southern Hesse. It has a unique tone and uses some special words.
In the past, almost every town had its own specific dialect. These dialects were sometimes hard for people from other parts of Germany to understand. Today, fewer people speak the true dialect. Most people now speak standard German but with a certain pronunciation that shows where they are from.
History of Eppertshausen
Eppertshausen is a very old settlement where people have lived for a long time. Places with names ending in -hausen often date back to the 7th to 9th centuries.
First Mention in History
The name Eppertshausen was first officially written down in a document in the year 836. At that time, the town was owned by the monastery in the nearby city of Seligenstadt.
From Farming to Factories
For many years, most people in Eppertshausen were farmers or craftsmen. They were not usually involved in trade. Each family owned land to grow their own food. However, when land was passed down to children, it was often divided among them. This meant that many families ended up with very small farms and were quite poor.
During the Industrial Revolution, which was a time of big changes in how things were made, the Rhine-Main area grew rapidly. Many factories were built, especially for working with metal, making leather goods, and processing chemicals. Many men from Eppertshausen found jobs in these factories. This helped them earn money and improved their living conditions.
