Babybel facts for kids
Mini Babybel is a popular French brand of small, round snack cheeses. Each cheese comes in its own colourful wax coating. It's made by a company called Le Groupe Bel, which started in France way back in 1865.
You might be surprised to learn that half of all Mini Babybel cheeses made worldwide come from a town called Évron in France. In the United States, Mini Babybel cheeses are made in Kentucky. In 2016, Bel Brands USA opened another factory in South Dakota. This factory was planned to make 1.5 million Mini Babybel cheeses every single day! By 2018, Le Groupe Bel had 12,700 employees all over the world. They even opened their first office in Canada, in Quebec.
What is Mini Babybel?
Mini Babybel is famous for its special packaging. Each little cheese is wrapped in a mix of coloured wax. This wax keeps the cheese fresh and is fun to peel off before you eat it! There are many different flavours of Mini Babybel available around the world.
Mini Babybel Flavours
Mini Babybel cheeses come in different colours of wax, which tell you what flavour they are. Here are some of the most common ones:
- Red: This is the classic Edam flavour. You can find it everywhere!
- Red with a light blue stripe or light blue: This is a lighter version of the Edam cheese.
- Black, Orange, or Purple: These colours usually mean it's Cheddar. The colour depends on where you are in the world.
- Yellow: This often means it's Emmental or Gruyere cheese.
- Brown or Orange: These colours are for Gouda cheese.
- Green: This is usually Mozzarella or sometimes Goat's cheese.
- Magenta: In the United States, this colour is for a "Sharp Original" cheese.
- Black: Some countries have a "High Protein" version in black wax.
- Green with leaves: This is for the "Vegan" or "plant-based" Mini Babybel.
Other Babybel Products
While Mini Babybel is the most popular, there are a few other types:
- Babybel Maxi: This is a larger version of the Edam cheese, mostly found in France.
- Mini Babybel Mini Rolls: These are fun little rolls of Edam cheese.
- Mini Babybel Cheese & Crackers: Some places offer Mini Babybel with crackers in a convenient pack.
Babybel Advertising
You might have heard the catchy Babybel advertising song! It uses the tune from an old song called "Barbara Ann" by The Regents. This jingle started in France in the late 1970s. It then spread to other parts of Europe and Canada by the early 1990s. The adverts often say that Babybel is a great snack for when you're "always on the go and ready for anything."
In the UK, Babybel used to have a slogan in the late 1990s and early 2000s that said, "Too tasty to share." More recently, a song called "Get in Line" by the band I'm from Barcelona has been used in their adverts. The band even rerecorded the song with a children's choir for the commercials.
