What is a Bacon and Egg Pie?
This pie usually has a strong base crust, often made from shortcrust pastry. It can have a pastry lid on top, or sometimes it's left open-faced.
A bacon and egg pie is different from a quiche. The main differences are that a bacon and egg pie usually doesn't have cheese or milk in the egg mixture, and it almost always has a top crust. Also, the eggs in a bacon and egg pie are often kept whole, or just have their yolks gently poked, instead of being fully beaten like in a quiche. This gives the pie a heavier, heartier feel.
Even though the idea of combining bacon and eggs is popular everywhere, this type of pie is especially well-known in New Zealand and Canada. People have been making recipes for bacon and egg pie for a very long time, with some recipes found as early as 1769 in a cookbook called The Experienced English Housekeeper.
