Badeshi was a language once spoken by people in a part of Pakistan. It belonged to a group of languages called Indo-Iranic. Sadly, Badeshi is now considered a "dead" language. This means that no one speaks it as their main language anymore.

The Badeshi language was spoken in the upper parts of the Bishigram Valley (also known as Chail), which is located east of Madyan, Swat, and Kohistan. This area is in the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

What Happened to Badeshi?

The Badeshi language used to be spoken by about 1,500 people in the Bishigram Valley and Tirat Valley. However, people in these areas stopped using Badeshi completely a few generations ago.

Why Did People Stop Speaking Badeshi?

In the Bishigram Valley, the Badeshi speakers started using the Torwali language instead. In the Tirat Valley, they switched to speaking Pashto. This often happens when a smaller language is surrounded by larger, more commonly used languages. Over time, people might find it more useful to speak the language of their neighbors for trade, education, or daily life.

Who is Studying Badeshi?

Even though Badeshi is no longer spoken, some people are interested in learning about it. Muhammad Zaman Sagar is a linguist, which is a scientist who studies languages. He has been working to collect information about the Badeshi language. For example, he has gathered some words that were once part of the Badeshi vocabulary. He visited the Bishigram Valley in 2007 to learn more from the people who remembered the language.
