Bahía del Carnero and the Quiapo River

Bahía del Carnero is a bay located on the coast of Chile. Its name means "Bay of the Sheep" in Spanish. It is a small cove, which means it's a sheltered part of the coast, but this one doesn't offer much protection for ships. You can find it in the Arauco Province of the Bío Bío Region. It's south of a place called Punta de Lavapié and north of the town of Lebu.

This bay is at about 37° 25' S latitude. At its northern end, you'll find the mouth of Caleta Yani, which is a small creek. At the southern end, there's Caleta Ranquil. This part of the bay is more protected by a piece of land that sticks out, called Millonhue. The coast around Bahía del Carnero is mostly flat and doesn't have many trees. The Quiapo River flows into this bay.

How the Bay Got Its Name

The name "Bahía del Carnero" was given by the crew of a ship in March 1540. This ship was part of an expedition led by Francisco de Camargo. When they visited the bay, the local people, who were Mapuche, gave them an animal they called a "sheep." This animal was actually a chillihueque, which is a domesticated guanaco. Guanacos are animals similar to llamas, native to South America.

The Mapudungun name for this bay was Alauquén. This name comes from two Mapudungun words: av, which means "end," and lauquen, which means "the sea." So, Alauquén means something like "the end of the sea."
