Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bahía Buen Suceso is a small bay in Argentina. It is located in the Tierra del Fuego province. People also call it the Bay of Good Success. This bay sits on the western side of the Le Maire Strait. This strait is a narrow passage of water. It separates Tierra del Fuego from Isla de los Estados (Staten Island).

A Bay with History

This bay got its name a long time ago. It was named during the Garcia de Nodal expedition. This happened between 1618 and 1619. The bay was named after a ship called Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso.

Many famous explorers visited this bay. Captain James Cook stopped here on his first and second voyages. This was in the late 1700s. Phillip Parker King also visited in 1830. Later, Robert Fitzroy and Charles Darwin came in December 1832. They were on the second voyage of HMS Beagle.

Why Was This Bay Important?

Bahía Buen Suceso was a good place for ships to stop. They could get fresh water and wood there. Phillip Parker King wrote about the bay. He said it was an excellent spot for ships of any size. They could anchor safely.

However, it was not ideal for ship repairs. A strong ocean swell often rolled into the bay. In winter, strong easterly winds were common. Because of this, ships had to anchor further from the shore. This was to avoid heavy waves. Explorers did not often try to catch fish there. They usually did not have much time. Only a few birds were hunted.
