Baishnab Charan Parida (born 15 February 1941 – died 22 November 2018) was an important person from Odisha, India. He was a BJD politician, a writer, and someone who worked to help society. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is like the upper house of India's Parliament. He represented the state of Odisha. His main beliefs were about socialism and secularism. Socialism means everyone in society should be equal. Secularism means respecting all religions.

He was chosen to be a member of the Rajya Sabha in July 2010. His term ended in July 2016. He worked hard to make sure the Odia language was officially recognized. This was done through the Odisha Official Language Act of 1954.

Early Life and Education

Baishnab Charan Parida was born on 15 February 1941. His family lived in a village called Srirampur in the Jajpur district of Odisha. His father, Jagbandhu Parida, worked in a jute factory in Kolkata. He was also a folk singer. His mother, Sulochana Parida, was a homemaker.

Baishnab went to Mangalpur primary school first. Then he attended Mahtab High School in Mangalpur. After finishing high school, he moved to Kolkata. He wanted to continue his studies there. His father was already working in Kolkata. He earned his first degree from Bangabasi College. Later, he got a master's degree in Political Science. This was from the University of Calcutta. He then went on to study in Moscow. He earned another advanced degree from Moscow State University.

Life in Kolkata and Early Work

From 1960 to 1992, Baishnab Parida was a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was a big supporter of Karl Marx's ideas. Marx believed in a society where everyone is equal. Baishnab became very active in groups that helped workers. These groups are called trade unions. He also worked with labor movements in West Bengal.

In 1964, he was chosen for a leadership role. He became a member of the Executive Committee of the West Bengal Students Federation. He also helped start groups for people from Odisha living in Kolkata. In 1963, he created the West Bengal Oriya Students Association. In 1965, he started the West Bengal Oriya Citizen Council. He also worked on the editorial board of "Soviet Land" (Oriya Editor). This was a magazine, and he worked there from 1965 to 1975.

He married Swarna Lata Parida on 3 March 1972.

Time in Moscow

In 1974, Baishnab Parida moved to Moscow with his family. He had a special job there. It was about helping India and the Soviet Union work together. He lived in Moscow for many years, until 1989.

While in Russia, he held several important jobs. From 1984 to 1989, he was a correspondent for RIA Novosti. This was a news agency. In 1988, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Indian Association. This group helped Indians living in the Soviet Union. During this time, he also worked as a special reporter. He wrote for "Samaja," a daily newspaper from Odisha. He also reported for Eastern Media from countries in Eastern Europe.

Return to Odisha and Political Journey

After 15 years in Moscow, Baishnab Parida came back to Odisha in 1989. He believed strongly in Marxist and socialist ideas. However, he had some disagreements with the Communist Party of India. He felt their ideas didn't quite fit India.

While in Moscow, he read about Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar. Gandhi believed in non-violence and truth. Ambedkar fought for the rights of all people, especially those who were treated unfairly. Baishnab became interested in their ideas.

In 1993, he joined the Indian National Congress party. He stayed with them until 1998. Again, he had some differences with the party leaders in Odisha. So, in 1999, he left Congress. He then joined the Samajwadi Party and became its State President. He worked with this party until 2008. In 2008, he joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party.

Books and Writings

Baishnab Charan Parida was a very active writer. He wrote many books on different topics. Some of his books were about politics and society. For example, he wrote about the "Caste System in India" and "Octopus of Corruption." He also wrote about "Political Economy."

Besides writing his own books, he translated many books. He translated 31 classic Russian books into the Odia language. These included famous works by writers like Maxim Gorky, Dostoevsky, and Leo Tolstoy. He also translated books by important thinkers like Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. He even translated many children's books into Odia.

He also helped edit books translated by other Odia writers. He translated an Odia novel called "Matir Manish" into Russian. He also helped translate 28 other best Odia stories into Russian. From 1963 to 1969, he published a fortnightly magazine called "Pratinidhi" from Kolkata. He regularly wrote articles for newspapers and journals. He also wrote many poems.

Baishnab Charan Parida passed away on 22 November 2018. He had been battling cancer.
