The Baker Ranger Station is an important historical site near Baker, Nevada. It was first set up in 1911. Its job was to manage government lands in White Pine County, Nevada.
At first, the area was called the Baker Administrative Site. In 1918, it became a full-time ranger station. This station was part of the Nevada National Forest. Later, in 1957, the Nevada National Forest was split up. The station then became a guard station and work area. This happened when the forest became parts of the Humboldt and Toiyabe National Forests.
In 1986, Great Basin National Park was created. The Baker Ranger Station was then given to the National Park Service. Today, it serves as an important office for the park.
What is the Baker Ranger Station?
A ranger station is like an office for park rangers. It helps them manage and protect natural areas. The Baker Ranger Station has a long history of doing just that. It has helped take care of government lands in Nevada for over a century.
Buildings at the Station
The Baker Ranger Station has several buildings. Four of these are made of wood and were built in the 1930s. There are also newer buildings on the site.
The very first ranger station building was built in 1911. It was a small, four-room building. This old building was removed before the new ones were built.
New buildings started going up in 1935. First, a small house, called a cottage, was built. Then came an office, a barn, and a garage. This garage also stored fire equipment.
These buildings were designed by the United States Forest Service. They were built by local workers. Many of these workers were part of a program called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a government program during the 1930s. It helped people find jobs during tough economic times. They worked on projects to improve parks and forests.
Why is the Station Important?
The Baker Ranger Station is a special place. It shows how people worked to protect natural resources in the past. Because of its history, the complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
