Sardar Mir Balakh Sher Mazari (Urdu: بلخ شیر مزاری), born on 8 July 1928, was an important politician from Pakistan. He passed away on 4 November 2022. He is best known for serving as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan for a short time in 1993.
A "caretaker prime minister" is like a temporary leader. They take charge for a short period, usually to prepare for new elections.
Balakh Sher Mazari was also the leader, or tumandar, of the Mazari tribe. This tribe lives in an area where three Pakistani provinces meet: Balochistan, Sindh, and Punjab. As the chieftain, he held the special title of "Mir." He was the 22nd Sardar and the seventh Mir of his tribe.
His family has also been involved in politics. His brother, Sherbaz Khan Mazari, was a politician too. His son, Sardar Riaz Mehmood Khan Mazari, was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan. His grandson, Mir Dost Mohammad Mazari, also served in the government.
Serving as Caretaker Prime Minister
Balakh Sher Mazari became the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan on 18 April 1993. This happened after the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was dismissed by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
When Mazari was appointed, his main job was to prepare the country for new general elections. He was expected to lead the government for about 90 days. He even set the date for the next elections as 14 July 1993.
However, his time as prime minister ended sooner than expected. On 26 May 1993, the Supreme Court of Pakistan made a decision. They cancelled the President's order and brought Nawaz Sharif back as the prime minister. So, Balakh Sher Mazari's term lasted for only about five weeks.
Balakh Sher Mazari died at the age of 94.
