The Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan is like a temporary leader of the country. This person steps in when the regular government's term ends or when the main assembly (called the National Assembly) is dissolved. Their most important job is to make sure that new elections are held fairly and freely.
The most recent Caretaker Prime Minister was Anwaar ul Haq Kakar. He took office on August 14, 2023, and served until March 4, 2024.
How a Caretaker Prime Minister is Chosen
When the National Assembly finishes its term or is dissolved early, the President needs to appoint a temporary government. This temporary government is led by the Caretaker Prime Minister.
Usually, the current Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition (the main leader of the parties not in power) talk and agree on who should be the Caretaker Prime Minister. If they can't agree, then the Election Commission of Pakistan steps in to choose someone. The Caretaker Prime Minister usually serves for up to three months.
