Political Career

Governor of Sindh

Muhammad Mian Soomro was appointed as the Governor of Sindh on 25 May 2000. This was his first big role in public service.

Chairman of the Senate

Soomro left his job as Governor of Sindh on 26 December 2002. He did this to run for elections to the Senate. He was elected as a Senator on 23 February 2003. Soon after, on 12 March 2003, he was chosen as the Chairman of the Senate. He held this position for several years.

He was sworn in by President Pervez Musharraf on 16 November. His term as caretaker prime minister ended on 25 March 2008. After that, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani became the new prime minister.

Acting President of Pakistan

When President Pervez Musharraf resigned on 18 August 2008, Soomro automatically became the Acting President. Asif Ali Zardari was elected as the new President. He was sworn in on 9 September 2008, taking over from Soomro.
