Wasim Sajjad Jan (Urdu: وسیم سجاد جان) was born on March 30, 1941. He is a Pakistani politician and lawyer. He served as the acting President of Pakistan two times. He also led the Senate of Pakistan as its Chairman from 1988 to 1999.

Wasim Sajjad was born in Jalandhar, which was part of British India. His father, Justice Sajjad Ahmad Jan, later became a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He also served as the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan.

Wasim Sajjad went to Army Burn Hall College. After that, he studied law at the University of the Punjab in Lahore. He then received a special scholarship called the Rhodes Scholarship. This allowed him to study at Oxford University in England. He earned degrees in law from Wadham College, Oxford in 1967. In 1968, he became a qualified lawyer in England.

When he returned to Pakistan, Wasim Sajjad became a lawyer there too. He also taught constitutional law at the Punjab Law College from 1967 to 1977.

Political Journey

Wasim Sajjad started his political career in 1985. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan. He was a member of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) party. From September 1986 to December 1988, he worked as the Minister for Law and Justice.

Leading the Senate

In December 1988, Wasim Sajjad was chosen as the Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan. He held this important position until 1997. During this time, he acted as the President of Pakistan two separate times. This happened during general elections when the main president's term ended.

Later Political Roles

In 1999, Wasim Sajjad joined a group of politicians who supported General Musharraf. General Musharraf had taken over the government. Wasim Sajjad then became the Leader of the House in the Senate in 2003. He stayed in this role until he retired from politics in 2008.

After retiring from politics, he became the Chairman of the Foundation of Advancement of Science and Technology (FAST). He also serves as the chancellor of the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences.

Other Roles

In 1989, Wasim Sajjad also served as the temporary president of the Pakistan Football Federation.
