Soomro comes from an influential family in Sindh, Pakistan. His family has been involved in national politics since 1923. His father, Ahmed Mian Soomro, was a Deputy Speaker and a Senator. His grandfather, Khan Bahadur Haji Moula Bux Soomro, was also a politician.

Governor of Sindh Province

Soomro began his public service when he was appointed as the Governor of Sindh on May 25, 2000. The Governor is the head of a province, similar to a state governor in other countries.

Chairman of the Senate

Soomro left his role as Governor of Sindh on December 26, 2002. He did this to run in the Senate elections. He was elected as a Senator on February 23, 2003. Soon after, on March 12, 2003, he was elected as the Chairman of the Senate. The Senate is one of the two houses of Pakistan's Parliament.

On November 15, 2007, Soomro was chosen as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. A caretaker prime minister leads the government for a short time. Their main job is to oversee elections fairly. Soomro was sworn in by President Pervez Musharraf on November 16. His term ended on March 25, 2008, after the new parliamentary election.

Acting President of Pakistan

When President Pervez Musharraf resigned on August 18, 2008, Soomro automatically became the Acting President. This happened because he was the Chairman of the Senate, and the constitution states that the Chairman of the Senate takes over if the President resigns. He served as Acting President until a new President, Asif Ali Zardari, was elected and sworn in on September 9, 2008.

Involvement in Education
