After finishing high school at Abbottabad Public School, Mulk studied at Jahanzeb College. He earned a BA in Fine Arts in 1970. The same year, he started studying law at Peshawar University. His professors saw him as a very "talented and bright student."
In 1972, he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from Peshawar University. Later, in 1976, Mulk became a barrister after studying at the Inner Temple in England. He also earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree.
Career in Law and Teaching
When Mulk returned to Pakistan, he started working as a lawyer at the Peshawar High Court. For a short time, he also taught law as a professor of law at Peshawar University. He also gave lectures on civil law at the Pakistan Administrative Staff College.
Mulk was a respected professor at Peshawar University. His students remembered him as someone who knew his subject very well and always came to class prepared.
He worked as a lawyer for over 17 years at the Peshawar High Court. He became known for being skilled and positive in his cases. In 1981, Mulk was chosen as the Secretary-General of the Peshawar High Court Bar. He later became the president of the Peshawar High Court Bar twice, in 1990 and 1993. From 1993 to 1994, Mulk was the Advocate General for the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, helping with legal matters.
Becoming a Judge
After meeting the requirements to be a judge, Mulk became a judge at the Peshawar High Court on 6 June 1994. He held this position until 2004. On 31 July 2004, he was appointed as Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court. In 2005, he moved to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
In November 2007, a lawyer named Aitzaz Ahsan asked the Supreme Court to stop the government from imposing martial law. A group of seven judges, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, issued an order against the state of emergency.
However, President Pervez Musharraf ignored this order and kept the emergency in place. Mulk refused to take a new oath under the emergency rules and was removed from the Supreme Court. A strong public movement by lawyers, supported by PML(N), eventually forced President Musharraf to resign. Mulk was then brought back to the Supreme Court and took a new oath as a judge.
