Nasirul Mulk (born August 17, 1950) is a Pakistani judge and politician. He served as the seventh caretaker prime minister of Pakistan in 2018. Before that, he was the Chief Justice of Pakistan from 2014 to 2015.
As a jurist (a legal expert), he was chosen by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to be the Chief Justice. On July 6, 2014, President Mamnoon Hussain confirmed his appointment. He also worked as the acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan from November 30, 2013, to July 6, 2014.
Before becoming a Senior Justice in 2005, Mulk was the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court in 2004. In his time on the Supreme Court, he focused on human rights and fairness.
On May 28, 2018, he was chosen as the caretaker prime minister. This happened before the general elections in July 2018.

Biography
Early Life and Education
Nasirul Mulk was born in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on August 17, 1950. He comes from a well-known family in Swat. His father, Kamran Khan, was a politician and served as a Senator. His younger brother, Shuja-ul-Mulk, also served as a Senator.
After finishing high school at Abbottabad Public School, Mulk went to Jahanzeb College. He earned a BA degree in 1970. In the same year, he started studying law at Peshawar University. His professors thought he was a very bright and talented student.
In 1972, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Peshawar University. In 1976, Mulk became a barrister in England. He also earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree.
Career in Law
Working as a Lawyer and Teacher
When he returned to Pakistan, Mulk started working as a lawyer at the Peshawar High Court. For a short time, he also taught law as a professor of law at Peshawar University. He also gave lectures on civil law at the Pakistan Administrative Staff College. His students remembered him as a professor who knew his subject very well.
Mulk practiced law for over 17 years at the Peshawar High Court. He became known for being skilled and positive in his cases. In 1981, Mulk was elected as the Secretary-General of the Peshawar High Court Bar. He later became president of the Peshawar High Court Bar twice, in 1990 and 1993. From 1993 to 1994, Mulk was appointed as an advocate general for the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In this role, he helped with legal matters for the government.
Judicial Career
Becoming a Judge
After meeting the requirements to be a judge, Mulk became a judge at the Peshawar High Court on June 6, 1994. He held this position until 2004. With the approval of the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mulk was appointed as Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court on July 31, 2004. He then moved to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2005.
Justice Mulk oversaw a very important and public case in 2002. He ruled that traditional councils, called Jirgas, could not unfairly punish people to settle disagreements. He stated that Jirgas must follow the law.
On November 2, 2007, a lawyer named Aitzaz Ahsan asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to stop the government from imposing martial law. A group of seven judges, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, issued an order against the emergency on November 3, 2007.
However, President Pervez Musharraf ignored this order and kept the emergency in place. Mulk refused to take a new oath under the emergency rules and was removed from the Supreme Court. Later, a strong public movement by lawyers, supported by the PML(N), led to President Musharraf's resignation. Mulk was then put back on the Supreme Court of Pakistan as a judge, keeping his original seniority.
As Chief Justice of Pakistan

He was appointed as Chief Justice of Pakistan on July 6, 2014.
Before this, he served as the acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan from November 30, 2013, to July 6, 2014. President Mamnoon Hussain oversaw his oath ceremony at the President's office in Islamabad. The previous Chief Justice, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, handed over his duties to Chief Justice Mulk.
Other judges describe Mulk as a very active judge who strictly follows the law. He is known for making sure laws are applied correctly. He retired as Chief Justice of Pakistan on July 16, 2015. Jawad S Khwaja took over his position.
As Caretaker Prime Minister
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was finishing his term as Prime Minister on May 31, 2018. On May 28, just three days before the government's term ended, Abbasi and the leader of opposition Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah agreed to appoint Nasirul Mulk as the temporary Prime Minister of Pakistan. After their decision, Mulk took his oath as caretaker prime minister at the Presidency Palace.
As caretaker prime minister, his first step was to change some government officials. He appointed Suhail Aamir as his Principal Secretary and Syed Abu Ahmad Akif as the Cabinet Secretary of Pakistan. In his first few days, he told the government's legal team to challenge a court decision that had canceled election nomination papers.
