Early Life and Education
Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi was born in a place called New Jatoi. This area is in the Naushahro Feroze District of Sindh, Pakistan. He was the oldest of four brothers in his family. His grandfather, Khan Bahadur Imam Bux Khan Jatoi, was also a politician. He was a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly several times. This was a government body in British India.
His father, Ghulam Rasool Jatoi, was also involved in politics. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. This is like a local parliament for the Sindh region.
Jatoi went to school at Karachi Grammar School. He then went to England in 1952 to study law. However, he had to come back home early. This was because his father became very ill.
Start of Political Career
Mr. Jatoi became a very active leader in politics. He helped start the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He worked closely with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who was a major political figure. Jatoi stayed with the PPP until 1986.
After that, he decided to form his own political party. He called it the National Peoples Party. The symbol for his new party was a tractor. This made him one of Pakistan's key political leaders with his own party.
Political Roles and Achievements
Jatoi was elected to the first Provincial Assembly of West Pakistan in 1956. He also served as the chairman of the District Board of Nawabshah District in 1952. He was the youngest person to hold this position in South Asia.
He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan many times. This is Pakistan's main parliament. He won elections in 1962, 1965, 1970, 1989, 1990, 1993, and 1997. He also served in the Sindh Provincial Assembly in 1973 and 1977.
Jatoi held many important jobs in the government. He was in charge of areas like Ports and Shipping, Communications, and Petroleum. He also looked after Information Technology and Railways. In 1973, he became the Chief Minister of Sindh. He held this job until 1977. He was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Sindh since Pakistan became a country.
After a period of military rule, Jatoi joined a group called the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD). This group worked to bring back democracy. He was arrested twice for his political activities.
Later, he founded the National Peoples Party. Many important politicians joined his new party. They created a plan for the country. The party hoped to become very popular.
Interim Prime Minister of Pakistan
In 1988, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi became the founder president of the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI). This was a group of political parties. In 1989, he was elected to the National Assembly again. He then became the leader of the opposition parties in the National Assembly.
Mr. Jatoi was chosen to be the Prime Minister in 1990. This happened after the government of Benazir Bhutto was removed. He served as the Caretaker Prime Minister for a short time.
Later, he joined other politicians to protest against the government of Nawaz Sharif. This led to that government being removed in 1993. His party, the NPP, then joined Benazir Bhutto's government. They worked together until that government was also removed in 1996.
In the 2002 general election, Jatoi led a new group called the National Alliance. This group won 16 seats in the National Assembly. They also won seats in the Sindh Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan.
