A Look Back: Bald Mountain's Past
In the 1870s, a surveyor named Verplanck Colvin used Bald Mountain. He used it as a special point for mapping the land. In 1886, Colvin even suggested a new name for the mountain's top: "Mt. St. Louis."
What's in a Name? Bald or Rondaxe?
Today, most people call this mountain Bald Mountain. But it actually got a new official name in 1912: Rondaxe Mountain. This happened because another mountain in a town called Croghan had the same name. The name Rondaxe comes from the nearby Rondaxe Lake.
