Ballyboughal, also sometimes called Ballyboghil, is a small village in the heart of Fingal, County Dublin, Ireland. It's located close to a place called the Naul. The name "Ballyboughal" has a cool meaning: "the town of the staff." This name comes from a very old and important item called the Bachal Isu, which was once kept safe here. Later, a famous person named Strongbow moved it to Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. Ballyboughal is about 4.4 kilometers away from Oldtown.

Discover Ballyboughal

Ballyboughal is a charming village with a rich history. It's a great place to learn about Ireland's past and enjoy some outdoor activities.

A Glimpse into History

Long ago, even before the Anglo-Normans arrived in Ireland, there was a monastery in Ballyboughal. This shows that the area has been important for a very long time.

There are two main churches in Ballyboughal. The Church of the Assumption was built in 1836. It serves as a local church for the parish of Naul. Even older is the medieval church, which now stands in ruins. You can find it in the Old Ballyboughal Burial Ground, just north of the village center. This is the very spot where the famous Bachal Isu was once kept!

The old church still has all its walls, but no roof. Inside, you can see some old grave markers. The building is divided into two parts: a nave and a chancel. It has doors on both the north and south sides. The west wall has a unique triple bell tower, and the east wall features an arched window from the 1300s.

Nature and Sports in Ballyboughal

The Ballyboghil River, also known as the Ballyboughal River, flows right through the middle of the village. It starts near Garristown and eventually flows into the Rogerstown Estuary.

If you're interested in flying, there's a private airfield called Ballyboughal Airfield (ICAO code EIBB) close to the village.

For sports fans, Ballyboughal has its own Gaelic Football Club, called Ballyboughal GFC. It was started in 1935 as Ballyboughal Rangers. Later, in 1940–41, it joined with Fingal Ravens and changed its name to Ballyboughal GFC. If golf is more your style, Hollywood Lakes Golf Club is also located nearby.
