History of Ballyduff
Near Ballyduff, you can find a tall round tower at a place called Rattoo. This tower is about 29.56 meters (97 feet) tall. Its base measures 15 meters (49 feet) around.
This is the only complete round tower in County Kerry. Experts believe it was built in the late 1000s. In the mid-1800s, the tower stood on a raised path in a swampy area. Later in the 1800s, the swamp was drained. The path was removed so the land could be used for farming.
During the Irish War of Independence in 1920, some buildings in the area were burned. This included a creamery and some homes. There is also a soup kitchen in Ballyduff that was used during the Great Famine (1845–1847). A forge, which is a place where metal is shaped, has also been recently fixed up.
