What is the History of Baltic?

How Baltic Village Started

Baltic grew up around a cotton mill. This mill was built near the Shetucket River in 1856. The land for the mill was bought by William Sprague III. He was a former governor and senator from Rhode Island.

The Mills and Their Changes

The first mill, called A. & W. Sprague Manufacturing Co., was destroyed by fire in 1887. After that, a man named Frederick Sayles bought the land. He built a new cotton mill called the Baltic Mills Co. This new mill opened in 1899.

The Baltic Mills Co. worked for many years. It was sold in 1963 and then closed in 1967. Later, in 1970, a company bought the property to use it for a mail order business.

Fires at the Mill Site

In August 1999, most of the old mill buildings were destroyed by another fire. Only one building survived, but it was badly damaged. It was later found that some local boys had started this fire.

On April 23, 2018, the mill site caught fire again. Fire officials thought hot sparks from cutting pipes might have caused the flames.
