Building History
This tall building, called a skyscraper, has 21 floors. It was designed by architects named Parker, Thomas & Rice and built in 1916. It stands about 88 meters (289 feet) tall. From 1916 to 1923, it was one of the tallest buildings in Baltimore, along with the Emerson Bromo-Seltzer Tower.
The building has a strong frame made of steel. Its floors were built with a special tile arch design. Outside, the first three floors are covered with gray granite and white marble. The rest of the building uses shiny terra cotta tiles. The style is called Beaux-Arts, which is a classical design. You can see sculptures on the fourth floor that represent "knowledge," "light," "heat," and "power."
The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it is a special place recognized for its history.
A smaller part was added to the building in 1966. It was designed by Fisher, Nes, Campbell and Associates. In 2006, the building was bought by Southern Management Corporation. It reopened in 2007 as fancy apartments, including two special penthouse levels.
2020 Incident
On December 23, 2020, an incident occurred at the building. More than 21 people were hurt, with at least 9 seriously injured. Part of the roof also collapsed. Over 23 people needed help to get out of the building, and everyone had to leave. The company, BGE, stated that the incident was not related to gas.
