History of Baltimore's Tall Buildings
The story of tall buildings in Baltimore began a long time ago.
Early Skyscrapers (Late 1800s)
The first really tall building, called a skyscraper, in Baltimore was the Equitable Building. It was built in 1889. This building was special because it used a new way of building with a steel frame, like a skeleton, and stone panels hung on the outside. This was a new idea from architects in Chicago.
Soon after, in 1893, the Fidelity Building was built. It started with eight floors, but later, more floors were added, making it 15 stories tall. It reached about 220 feet (67 meters), becoming the first building in Baltimore to be over 200 feet tall!
Building Booms and Rebuilding (Early 1900s)
Baltimore had a lot of new tall buildings built from the late 1890s until a big fire in 1904. This fire, called the Great Baltimore Fire, burned the insides of many new "fire-proof" skyscrapers. But luckily, their strong steel frames and outside walls were okay. So, most of them were rebuilt in the next five years.
More tall buildings were constructed from the 1910s to the late 1920s. One important building from this time is the Baltimore Trust Company Tower, which is now known as the Bank of America Building.
Modern Growth (1960s-1990s)
After the Great Depression in the 1930s and World War II, not many skyscrapers were built for a while. But in the 1960s, Baltimore started a big building boom! This was because of new plans to improve the city, like the Charles Center project and the famous "Inner Harbor" area.
During this time, from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, 18 of the city's 24 tallest buildings were finished. This included the Transamerica Tower in 1973 and the unique five-sided Baltimore World Trade Center in 1977.
Today, Baltimore has 193 completed tall buildings. Four of them are at least 492 feet (150 meters) high. The newest tall building is 414 Light Street, which opened in 2018. It is 500 feet (152.4 meters) tall with 44 floors, making it the tallest home-only building in Maryland.
