Banat is a small community in Menominee County, Michigan. It is where Holmes Township has its main office. Romanian immigrants named Banat. They came from a region called Banat in Europe during the mid-1800s.
Long ago, Banat was a busy place. It had a school, a church, stores, a gas station, and even a train station. People first farmed here. But by the 1900s, farming became hard because of the soil and weather. Many people moved away. The school and church closed down.
Today, Banat has a small number of people living there all the time. Many old homes are now used for fun activities. People enjoy hunting and fishing. There is also a course for cross-country skiing that opened in the late 1990s. A rental lodge and a storage facility are the main businesses now. Recently, some farming has started again, especially for crops like soy and corn. There is also at least one cattle farm.
