The Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is a famous place for playing golf. It has five main golf courses and two smaller ones. These courses are called "links" courses because they are built right next to the Pacific Ocean in southwest Oregon, U.S.. The resort is known for its beautiful views and challenging golf.

Exploring the Golf Courses

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort has many different courses, each with its own special feel. Golfers from all over the world come to play here.

Bandon Dunes: The First Course

The very first course, named Bandon Dunes, opened on May 19, 1999. A designer from Scotland, David McLay Kidd, created it. People loved it right away! This course is often where guests get their best scores. This is because it has wide areas to hit the ball and greens that are not too tricky.

Pacific Dunes: A Top-Rated Course

The second course, Pacific Dunes, opened on July 1, 2001. It was designed by Tom Doak. This course quickly became very popular. In 2005, Golfweek magazine called Pacific Dunes the best resort golf course in the country. It was even ranked higher than the famous Pebble Beach.

Bandon Trails: Away from the Ocean

Bandon Trails is the resort's third course, opening on June 1, 2005. It was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Unlike the other courses, Bandon Trails does not have holes along the ocean. Instead, it winds through sandy hills, open fields, and forests. When it opened, a golf travel newsletter called Bandon Dunes "The Best Place on the Planet for Golf."

Old Macdonald: A Tribute to Golf History

The fourth course, Old Macdonald, opened in June 2010. It was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina. This course is named after Charles Blair Macdonald, a very important person in golf history.

Bandon Preserve: A Fun Short Course

Bandon Preserve is a special short course with 13 holes. It is a "Par-3" course, meaning each hole is designed to be completed in three shots. Coore and Crenshaw also designed this course, and it opened on May 1, 2012.

The Punchbowl: A Giant Putting Green

The Punchbowl is a huge putting course, about 100,000 square feet in size! It was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina and opened in 2014. It has 18 holes and usually takes about an hour to play. It is a fun place to practice your putting skills.

Sheep Ranch: Ocean Views Galore

The sixth course, Sheep Ranch, opened on June 1, 2020. It has over a mile of ocean views! Many holes feature shots over water and cliffs. This land was once a wind farm. The resort's owner, Mike Keiser, and his partner decided to turn it into a golf course. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed this course.

Shorty's: The Newest Addition

The newest course, Shorty's, opened on May 2, 2024. It is a 19-hole Par-3 course with amazing views. It is named after Shorty Dow, who used to own the land and was a good friend of Mike Keiser. It is a tribute to their friendship.

Important Resort Rules

At Bandon Dunes, you usually cannot use golf carts. This helps keep the courses natural and encourages walking, which is a big part of the "links" golf experience. Golf carts are only allowed if someone needs one for medical reasons.

In 2009, Golf Magazine listed three of Bandon Dunes' courses among the 50 best built in the last 50 years. Pacific Dunes was ranked second, Bandon Dunes twelfth, and Bandon Trails thirty-third. The resort is known as a top place for golf trips.

Major Golf Tournaments Held Here

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has held many important amateur golf tournaments at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Early Tournaments

The USGA first came to Bandon Dunes in 2006 for the Curtis Cup. This is a team competition for amateur women golfers from the U.S. against Great Britain and Ireland. The U.S. team won this event, which was played on the Pacific Dunes course.

In 2007, the resort hosted the U.S. Mid-Amateur Golf Championship. The Bandon Dunes course was the main course for this event.

Joint Championships

Bandon Dunes hosted the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links and the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links championships. This was the first time the USGA held both the men's and women's Public Links events at the same place. These tournaments were played on the Old Macdonald and Bandon Trails courses.

Newer Events

In 2015, the resort hosted the first U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball tournament. This event replaced the Public Links championships. It was held on the Pacific Dunes course.

Bandon Dunes was also the site of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball. The Old Macdonald course was the main course used for this event.

In 2020, the resort hosted the U.S. Amateur for the first time. Tyler Strafaci won the tournament.

Future Championships

The USGA has announced that many more championships will be held at Bandon Dunes through 2045. These include the 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 2029 Walker Cup.

In 2022, the resort hosted the U.S. Junior Amateur for the first time.

College Tournaments

Since 2010, Bandon Dunes has hosted an annual college golf tournament called the Bandon Dunes Championship. Top college teams from across the country come to compete. The 2024 championship was planned for March 10-12 on Pacific Dunes but was canceled due to bad weather.
