Bangs is a city located in Brown County in west-central Texas, United States. It's a small city with a rich history. In 2020, about 1,540 people lived there.

Where is Bangs, Texas?

Bangs is easy to find because two major roads, U.S. Routes 67 and 84, go right through it. These roads connect Bangs to other towns. For example, you can travel east about 9 miles to Brownwood, which is the main city of Brown County. Or, you can go west about 11 miles to Santa Anna.

The United States Census Bureau says that Bangs covers about 3.8 square kilometers (or 1.5 square miles). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the city limits.

History of Bangs

Bangs was named after Samuel Bangs. He was a printer during the Texas Revolution and was given the land for his services. However, it's said that he never actually visited the land.

Early Days and Growth

  • In 1886, train tracks were built from Brownwood to San Angelo, and a train station was set up in Bangs.
  • That same year, a general store opened, and a post office was approved on May 24, 1886.
  • By 1892, Bangs had its first school. The town had about 50 people and eight businesses.
  • Bangs officially became a city in 1915. At that time, it had 600 residents and 21 businesses.
  • A water system was installed in 1916, followed by natural gas lines.

Education and Modern Times

  • The Bangs Independent School District was created in 1927. This district brought together nine other smaller school districts.
  • In 1937, US Highway 67 was built through the town, making travel easier.
  • After World War II, new houses were built in Bangs as the town continued to grow.

A Famous Visitor

In 1948, when Bangs had 756 people, a future president visited the town. Lyndon Johnson, who was running for senator at the time, arrived by helicopter. About 700 people came out to greet him!
