Bannertail: The Story of Gray Squirrel (also known as シートン動物記 りすのバナー (Shīton Dōbutsuki Risu no Banā) in Japan) is a fun Japanese anime TV show. It was made by Nippon Animation in 1979. The story is based on a children's book called Bannertail, written by Ernest Thompson Seton in 1922.
The show has 26 episodes. It tells the exciting story of Banner, a young squirrel who becomes an orphan. A kind mother cat finds him and raises him like her own kitten. The series follows Banner's adventures as he learns to live in the wild forest. This anime was also popular in other countries. In Germany, it was called Puschel, das Eichhorn. In Arab countries, it was known as Sanjoob or Sanajeb-el Gaaba. People in Spain and Latin America knew it as Banner & Flappy, and in Portugal, it was Bana & Flapi.

Banner
- Banner (voiced by Noriko Tsukase in Japanese, and Robert Axelrod in English) is the main hero of the story.
- He is a young squirrel who always wears a small bell around his neck.
- Banner lost his parents when he was a baby. A kind cat adopted him and raised him.
- In the first episode, a big fire separates him from his adopted mother. He then runs away to the forest.
- There, he meets other wild squirrels and learns how to survive on his own.
- Because he was raised by a cat, Banner is much braver and tougher than other squirrels.
- Instead of running away from danger, he often faces predators head-on. He especially does this to protect his friends.
Sue
- Sue (voiced by Keiko Yokozawa) is a young female squirrel. She often has a pretty flower in her hair.
- She likes Banner because he is innocent and kind.
- Sue helps Banner a lot as he learns how to live in the wild forest.
- Later in the series, Banner and Sue get married and have baby squirrels in the very last episode.
Grandfather
- Grandfather (voiced by Kazuomi Ikeda) is Sue's grandfather.
- He is the oldest and wisest squirrel in the forest.
- Grandfather leads important events and makes all the big decisions for the squirrel community.
- He is known for being very calm and thoughtful.
Clay
- Clay (voiced by Masako Sugaya) is a squirrel who is much younger than Banner.
- He is the first wild squirrel Banner meets in the forest. Banner saves Clay from a fox.
- After that, Clay and Banner quickly become the best of friends.
Lori
- Lori (voiced by Hiroko Maruyama) is Clay's mother. She is very protective of her son.
- She is always worried about Clay's safety.
- At first, Lori and other squirrels don't trust Banner. But they change their minds after Banner saves both her and Clay from a farmer.
Gocha and Radōru
- Gocha (voiced by Shigeru Chiba) and Radōru (voiced by Kaneta Kimotsuki) are two squirrel friends who bring a lot of humor to the show.
- They are a bit unfriendly towards Banner at first, especially Radōru.
- But they become close friends with Banner after he rescues Radōru from a scary snapping turtle.
Akācho
- Akācho (voiced by Takeshi Aono) is a squirrel with long, pointed ears.
- He likes Sue and becomes a rival to Banner, trying to win her over.
- Akācho is often cunning, a bit sneaky, and very arrogant.
Uncle Owl
- Uncle Owl (voiced by Ichirō Nagai) is an owl and one of the first forest animals Banner meets.
- At first, Uncle Owl plans to eat Banner. But Banner, thinking he's a cat, fights back instead of running away.
- This earns Banner Uncle Owl's respect, and they eventually become friends.
- Sadly, when hunters come into the forest, Uncle Owl is killed by a bullet that was meant for Banner.
Mother Cat
- Mother Cat (voiced by Ikuko Tani) is Banner's adopted mother.
- She found Banner alone as a baby and raised him as her own kitten.
- She is the one who gave Banner the little bell he wears.
- Mother Cat and Banner get separated in a fire in the first episode. But don't worry, they are eventually reunited!
