Banning was once a small community in Delaware, USA. It was located in an area called Cedar Creek Hundred within Sussex County. Banning was not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it was an unincorporated community, meaning it was a collection of homes and businesses without a formal local government.

What Was Banning, Delaware?

Banning was mainly known as a stop along the Queen Anne's Railroad line. This railroad connected the towns of Ellendale and Greenwood. The Banning stop was found at the northeast corner of what is now Road 44 (also known as Blacksmith Shop Road) and Delaware Route 16 (Beach Highway).

The Railroad's Role in Banning

Railroads were very important in the past. They helped people travel and moved goods from one place to another. Many small communities, like Banning, grew up around these railroad stops. People would live and work near the station to be close to transportation.

Why Did Banning Disappear?

The Queen Anne's Railroad eventually stopped running. When a railroad line is no longer used, it is called "defunct." After the Queen Anne's Railroad closed down, its tracks were removed. All the land that the railroad owned in Banning was given back to its original owner, Mark L. Banning. Without the railroad, the small community that had formed around the stop slowly disappeared. Today, Banning is considered a ghost town or a former populated place.
