Banta is a small place in Indiana, a state in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of two larger areas: Johnson County and Morgan County.

History of Banta

How Banta Got Its Name

Banta used to have its own post office, which opened in 1883. This post office helped people send and receive mail, but it closed down in 1904.

The community was named after a man named David Demaree Banta. He was born in 1833 and passed away in 1896. David Banta was a historian, meaning he studied and wrote about history. He was also a judge in Johnson County.

Before 1883, this place had a different name: Dresslarsville.

David Banta's Legacy

David Banta was an important person at Indiana University in Bloomington. He was a trustee, which means he helped manage the university. He also became the very first dean of its law school in 1889. A dean is like a principal for a specific part of a university. He worked there until he passed away in 1896.

David Banta's older son, George Banta, also became successful. In 1901, George started a company called the Banta Corporation in Menasha, Wisconsin.
