Bar Harbor is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It's located in the town of Bar Harbor in Hancock County, Maine, United States. In 2020, about 2,260 people lived in the Bar Harbor CDP. The larger town of Bar Harbor had a population of 5,235 in 2010.
Geography: Where is Bar Harbor?
Bar Harbor is found on Mount Desert Island in Maine. It's in the eastern part of the town of Bar Harbor. The community is next to Frenchman Bay on its northeast side. On the west, it's bordered by Paradise Hill Road, and to the south by Park Loop Road and Bear Brook. Parts of Bar Harbor are actually inside Acadia National Park, a famous national park. The community also stretches northwest along Route 3 to Hulls Cove.
Maine State Route 3 is the main road that goes through Bar Harbor. It connects the community to the mainland and to Ellsworth, which is about 20 miles away. Route 3 also goes south through Acadia National Park to Northeast Harbor. Another road, Maine State Route 233, goes west from Bar Harbor to Somesville.
The Bar Harbor CDP covers an area of about 3.2 square miles (8.2 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
