The Baranha or Barna people, also known as Barada Barna, are an Australian Aboriginal group from northern Queensland, Australia. They have a rich history and strong connection to their traditional lands.

The Baranha people have their own unique language. Experts believe their traditional language is a dialect of the Biri language. Learning about their language helps us understand their culture and history better.

Traditional Lands of the Baranha People

The Baranha people's traditional lands cover a large area. According to Norman Tindale, a famous researcher, their lands were about 3,200 square miles (8,300 square kilometers). This area was mainly around the source of the Isaac River. Their lands stretched west to the Denham Range and south near Cotherstone. They also lived around Grosvenor Downs. To their north were the Wiri people, and to their east were the Baradha people.

Understanding Native Title for Baranha People

Native Title is a special legal recognition of the traditional rights and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to land and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs.

Native Title Determination for Baranha

In July 2016, a judge named John Dowsett from the Federal Court of Australia made an important decision. He officially recognized the native title rights for the Barna people. This decision covered about 2,699 square kilometers (1,042 square miles) of land.

Another part of the decision involved 530 square kilometers (205 square miles) of land. This area is shared with the Widi people. These lands and waters are located southwest of Mackay and northwest of Rockhampton in an area called the Bowen Basin.

Managing Baranha Native Title Rights

To help manage their native title rights, the Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation was created on January 19, 2016. This corporation is a special group that holds and manages the native title rights and interests for the Baranha people. They act as a trustee or agent, making sure these important rights are protected and used for the benefit of their community.
